MTV RE: DEFINE 2016
In 2016 MTV Staying Alive Foundation & Dallas Contemporary Museum hosted the MTV RE:DEFINE benefit auction for its 5th anniversary in partnership with The Goss Michael Foundation. This dynamic charity art exhibition and fundraising auction was held in Dallas, Texas raising $2.5 million to aid their mission to build an empowered and educated generation of young people, equipped with the tools and knowledge to protect themselves and their peers from the HIV epidemic. The work entitled 'Lonely Tylenol' by artist Massimo Agostinelli from the revered 'Palindromes Series, 2014' was among the art on view.
MTV RE:DEFINE celebrated its 5th anniversary with a record breaking auction at Dallas Contemporary. The evening was helmed by MC Oli Barret, while auctioneer Simon de Pury was back with the gavel after a hiatus from the last two auctions. Both Barrett and de Pury kept the crowd on their toes, engaging them over the course of the evening.
Neville Wakefield curated the auction, which was considered by everyone to be the strongest lineup of art in MTV RE:DEFINE’s history; works by the likes of Sterling Ruby, Dan Colen, Marc Quinn, Damien Hirst and Bruce Weber all sold above their estimates and contributed a sizeable chunk of the $2.5 million raised.
To cap off the live auction, multi platinum singer/songwriter Leona Lewis brought down the house with a stripped-down acoustic set that included an incredible rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and she brought the crowd to their feet as she closed with her hit single Bleeding Love.
